Office and Program Intern

The Homeless Children's Playtime Project runs eight weekly children's activity programs in five District homeless shelters and transitional housing programs where volunteers provide a safe haven from the stress of homelessness.

We are looking for a mature, flexible, self-starting college student who is willing to doing critical office-related tasks as well as support our program on-site at DC General Emergency Shelter. This is an unpaid internship for 15-20 hours/week.

Internship duties include:

  • Organize the incoming office donations on both main level and basement of office
  • Assist office staff with priority projects (e.g. communication development packet, spreadsheet of grants, mailings, data entry, etc.)
  • Assist in developing Playtime Curriculum
  • Attend Playtime at DC General on Tuesday and Thursday evenings
  • Communicate between parents and organization, in conjunction with MSW intern and staff, to ensure parents’ needs are met and appropriate referrals are made
  • Coordinate and distribute donations to parents based on needs
  • Oversee the volunteers working in the Parent Resource Center
  • Fill supply needs (diapers, paper, hand sanitizer, etc.)
  • Maintain organization of all Playtime areas at DC General

Criteria:

  • Flexibility, sense of humor, dedicated to supporting DC’s homeless population, and interest in learning how a small nonprofit organization works
  • Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills to interact with clients and staff
  • Ability to move boxes up and down stairs
  • Candidates with cars will especially be considered

Description

Playtime Project is a small staff team supported by countless volunteers providing weekly activities, healthy snacks, and opportunities for play to the children at shelters, schools, and community spaces in DC and Prince George's County, MD. Through weekly children’s programs at multiple locations, volunteers provide playful games, chances to learn through art, movement and imaginative play, one-on-one attention and caring adult supervision for children.
