Become a volunteer tutor and teach a small group of adults how to speak English in our ESOL Program.
All tutors complete a training, and then meet with students at any Hillsborough County Public Library once or twice a week. We provide all materials.
Our ESOL program has over 200 students waiting for a tutor. Our greatest need is in Town 'N Country, Upper Tampa Bay, Temple Terrace and Brandon. Visit our website at http://hillsboroughliteracy.org to register for our next training on October 16.
To work in our ESOL program, you do not need to speak another language, and it's best if you don't! That way, your students must speak English to communicate with you from the start. Also, previous teaching experience is not necessary.

About Hillsborough Literacy Council
Location:
102 E 7th Ave, Tampa, FL 33602, US
Mission Statement
The Hillsborough Literacy Council (HLC) promotes and provides quality literacy services in a friendly, professional, and confidential environment for adults in Hillsborough County who wish to learn to read, write and converse at a higher level of proficiency through the help of highly motivated volunteers. HLC understands and respects the importance of each of its stakeholders.
Description
The Hillsborough Literacy Council (HLC) offers two programs, adult basic literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages.
HLC teaches functionally and marginally illiterate adults to read and write through its Adult BASIC Literacy Program. This program is geared towards adults over the age of 18 with a goal to bring them to a minimum fifth grade reading level. In the BASIC program, tutoring is done on a one-on-one basis.
In the English for Speakers of Other Languages Program (ESOL), the tutors teach speakers of other languages, over the age of 18, to read, write and communicate in English. ESOL students are local residents with various nationalities and limited communication skills. ESOL classes are generally taught in groups, but may also be done one-on-one.
Prior teaching experience is not required of our tutors. Both the BASIC and ESOL programs are taught to potential tutors through virtual training sessions.
