2012 Volunteers Improve Spy Pond Park in Arlington
Arlington, MA

People Making a Difference (PMD), which organizes one-time, hands-on volunteer projects for individuals, partners with select businesses to promote effective community involvement, and trains and assists nonprofit leaders in quality volunteer management, is seeking qualified candidates for its expanding Board of Directors. Board nominations are being accepted on a rolling basis for three-year terms.

PMD is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in any of the following areas:

  • Fundraising and/or Event Planning Experience. Introduce and mentor inexperienced but motivated board directors for annual appeal, annual spring benefit, and friend-raising initiatives.
  • Talent Acquisition. Help us identify and recruit new board leaders with shared values and priorities

We strongly recommend that potential board candidates become acquainted with the typical work of PMD by FIRST signing up and participating in a PMD service project as a volunteer.

Then to nominate yourself: email lori@pmd.org and describe why you are interested in serving on PMD's Board and your relevant skills and experience. Please include your resume or a description of your professional and community activities.

Since PMD was founded in 1992, it has engaged and learned from more than 9,800 volunteers and 46 for-profit business partners. PMD has organized and run 1,380+ service projects, helping 144 partner/recipient charities, of which 82% do not have staffing and other resources dedicated to working with volunteers and so need assistance in order to involve volunteers effectively. PMD has built a reputation for providing high quality volunteer experiences that make a real difference to local charities.

Community Service Projects - PMD's award winning, well planned service projects engage volunteers in meaningful, hands-on work that effectively meets real needs and educates volunteers about the context of their work. Participants consistently feel energized and motivated from making a difference as PMD volunteers. PMD also trains and supervises a corps of experienced volunteer project managers who lead volunteer groups.

Corporate Community Involvement - PMD partners with businesses of all sizes to identify clear community service goals and objectives and then to develop appropriate employee volunteer opportunities. PMD's involvement ranges from research and project development to complete planning and full-service execution, such that employers need only recruit participants. PMD offers experience, innovation, and convenience. Recent corporate partners included BNY Mellon, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Novartis.

Assisting Nonprofit Leaders - PMD trains and provides technical assistance to charities in implementing strategic practices in volunteer management, so that other nonprofits will embrace high standards that are the hallmarks of PMD's successful service program.

"Like" us and "Show First" in (your) News Feed.

You need only commit to participate for the entire project time span--no dues, no required advance orientation meetings, and no skills assumed. About half of the volunteers of any given PMD project (which involve 12-25 people total) are first-time PMD volunteers, so no need to worry about cliques or not feeling included.

In order to participate, you must register yourself (not freinds, spouses, or children--each individual must register him/her-self) online using the unique zoomernag link listed under HOW in the details for each project. If you cannot register using a desk- or lap-top computer, please call PMD at (*82)1-781-963-0373 for assistance.

After you register online, you will see a confirmation screen and receive a confirmation email message. Then a few days before the project you will be emailed PDF information about what to expect, what to bring, and how to get there (by car and by public transportation).
