Mission Statement

The Su Lab at The Scripps Research Institute works in the field of bioinformatics, applying the tools of computer science and statistics to the pursuit of biological discovery. We strongly believe in open science and have made (or will make) all of the research tools and softwares developed in our lab freely available for public use.

Through citizen science and volunteer opportunities, we aim to:

  • Find new solutions to big data challenges facing biomedical researchers,
  • Engage the public in science and encourage people to keep learning
  • Build relationships between researchers, healthcare providers, volunteers, and patient communities to demonstrate how we can all work together to facilitate disease-focused biomedical research.

Description

Our research group is particularly interested in participatory science and crowdsourcing. Participatory science can help with many big data issues facing researchers, but more importantly, it can help educate, inform, and engage people in science.

For me, Mark 2 Cure has been an excellent micro-volunteering opportunity that has allowed me to pursue my citizen science efforts when I don't have a lot of time. The website used to complete the work, in particular, allows volunteers to dive right in at any point of the day and work on a document. The staff is very responsive on social media and by email, which is very helpful. The training was decent enough, but the work definitely takes some time to become familiar with it.
