Since its founding by three Roman Catholic priests in 1972 as one of the oldest Latino operated housing organizations in New York City, Los Sures has created and preserved thousands of affordable housing opportunities for the areaâ s predominantly low-income residents. It has evolved into a multi-faceted non-profit aimed at creating and managing low-income housing, aiding tenants in the purchase and maintenance of their buildings, and serving the social needs of a population that is 68% Latino through programs to combat family violence, increase access to entitlements and provide recreation and nutrition for seniors. Our primary catchment area is Metropolitan Ave. (N), Union Ave. (E), Division Ave. (S) and the East River (W). We also serve families in other low-income, heavily Latino sections of Williamsburg, including the Broadway Triangle. Los Sures continues to reaffirm its mission of creating and preserving low-income housing by working with government, philanthropy, and informed residents to create strategically planned low-income and affordable housing. Los Suresâ success in gaining control over and rehabilitating low-income housing has been a hedge against the pressures of gentrification and displacement within the community. At the current time the Los Sures management and tenant organizing units combined are assisting thousands of families to gain or hold onto truly affordable housing through management of over 1100 apartments, tenant co-operatives, 7-a court appointed receiver buildings or tenant associations.
