The Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) is currently in need of a Publicity & Marketing Coordinator who is willing to oversee publicity campaigns for a non-profit society. The volunteer will be working with the society's leadership to design and implement a publicity/marketing campaign to promote SCGS and its activities, programs and fundraising events. This individual would also support the Jamboree Committee's publicity and public relations activities.

The Volunteer will be responsible for coordinating advertising, public information, and publications. This would include writing press releases, articles, ads and informational pieces on behalf of SCGS.

Projects

  • Working with program coordinators to establish a calendar
  • Generate list of publicity outlets - (newspapers, periodicals, websites, tv, flyers, radio, societies, blogs, newsletters, in person outreach, etc.) with advertising requirements (i.e., publication deadlines, etc.)
  • Develop publicity manual
  • Develop new and innovative ideas for publicizing the Society
  • Develop television and radio PDA Program and produce appropriate spots
  • Initiate and maintain contact with press representatives and potential advertisers

The Southern California Genealogical Society is a 1,400+ member, all-volunteer genealogy and family history society. Our mission is to foster interest in genealogy, preserve records of genealogical and historical importance, and to train all who are interested in efficient and effective research techniques. To support our mission SCGS has created one of the largest private, non-church sponsored genealogy collections in the Western United States. This collection is housed in the Society's Library and Headquarters in Burbank, California. SCGS regularly offers genealogy classes and lectures, host special interest groups, publish a newsletter, quarterly journal, and California-centric research materials, and maintain a web site. SCGS also sponsors the largest genealogy conference on the West Coast.

Description

The Southern California Genealogical Society was organized January 10, 1964. It is the largest volunteer-managed genealogical society west of the Mississippi.

Through its programs, members are offered the opportunity to list queries, survey indexes, join special interest groups and provide support for other members and their activities. The Society maintains a library with over 35,000 volumes including 6,000 family histories. Research resources also include manuscripts, microforms, maps, periodicals and electronic data resources for use by its members and the general public. Library holdings include materials from every state and many countries, with emphasis on Germany, French Canadian, Cornwall, and other special collections.

The Society is a non-profit corporation and enjoys 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Donations of cash or library materials made to the Society may qualify as charitable contributions.

The annual Genealogical Jamboree is recognized as one of the premier education and vendor events in the United States.
