The Iowa Civil Rights Commission is making 8 one-year, full-time positions available through its Iowa Human & Civil Rights VISTA Project. The project seeks to eliminate the obstacles discrimination, economic crises, or housing crises create for people trying to escape poverty. All positions are 40 hours a week, mostly weekdays but with some evenings and weekends.
Possible Job Responsibilities: development, publication, and distribution of educational and outreach materials; attendance at local and state events, workshops, conferences, and fairs; survey of civil rights and human rights trends; research on the history of civil and human rights; highlight and publish best practicies of ending discrimination and promoting diversity; grant research and writing; assist with fair housing, disability, and diversity initiatives; and translation of documents (if applicable).
Benefits: Living allowance of $10,296; 10 days personal leave; 10 days of sick leave; End of Service Benefit of either a $4,725 education award or $1,200 cash stipend; Forbearance of qualified student loans; relocation allowance if moving more than 50 miles to site; childcare assistance if eligible; liability insurance; one year non-competive eligibility for federal government service.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Civil Rights Commission is to enforce civil rights laws, increase public awareness of civil rights, provide dispute resolution services, and offer community services throughout the state.
Description
The Commission's major duty is to enforce state and federal statutes that prohibit discrimination in employment, public accommodations, housing, education and credit by investigating and litigating civil rights complaints. In addition, the Commission provides conflict resolution services and mediation for civil rights matters. In addition to its role as an enforcer of civil rights laws, the Commission actively educates the public to prevent discrimination, biased conduct and stereotypes.
