Mercer Island is graced with 35 parks, over 400 acres of natural areas, and more than 50 miles of trails. Volunteers have been improving these parks for many years, planting native trees and shrubs and removing invasive plants (primarily English ivy) but much more work remains to be done. The Mercerdale Hillside Park is a classic example of an urban forest that is being over-run with invasive plants. This area is mostly filled with deciduous trees with many native conifers growing up in the understory. Unless the invasive species are removed, they will crowd and shade-out the young natives that are necessary for a healthy forest. Volunteers will be crucial in the next few years in keeping this forest from being over-run by non-native ivy, laurel and holly.
