The JFS Polack Food Bank on Capitol Hill is seeking volunteers who speak Russian or Chinese (Mandarin).

About 1,500 households visit the Polack Food Bank each month. The Food Bank operates on a consumer-choice model where clients choose products according to their personal needs and preferences. Our goal is to provide people the food and toiletries they need with the dignity they deserve.

At the JFS Food Bank, we serve six surrounding ZIP codes, and many Food Bank visitors speak Russian or Mandarin, as well as other languages. As a Food Bank Translator, you will help communicate with Food Bank visitors during our open Food Bank hours.

Shifts:

  • Typically, one day a week during Food Bank hours:
  • Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. - noon
  • Thursdays, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
  • Fridays, from 10:00 a.m. - noon

Responsibilities:

  • Arrive at the Capitol Hill Food Bank no later than 15 minutes prior to the Food Bank opening.
  • Act in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Communicate with Food Bank visitors, Food Bank staff and other Food Bank volunteers.
  • Occasionally contact home delivery clients via phone or translate documents.
  • Perform other tasks as needed, such as bulk packaging, clean up, recycling, or stocking shelves.

Requirements:

  • Ability to speak Russian and/or Mandarin.
  • Age 16 or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
  • Work cooperatively with JFS staff and volunteers.
  • Cultural sensitivity and respect for clients and mission of the Food Bank.
  • Successful completion of application process, including background and reference checks.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. is helpful but not required.

JFS Refugee & Immigrant Service Centers offer refugees and immigrants culturally sensitive employment programs, English as a Second Language instruction and related social services. Participants are supported and encouraged as they integrate successfully into their new environments. The JFS Refugee & Immigrant Service Centers are staffed with professional case managers/job developers fluent in Cantonese, Hmong, Mandarin, Laotian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Somali, Arabic, Farsi and Lithuanian. The culturally diverse staff is recruited directly from the ethnic communities we serve. Our staff provides individualized and effective guidance to hundreds of clients each year. The Centers are located in Kent and Bellevue and serve families mainly in South King County and the Eastside.

Description

Jewish Family Service of Seattle began in 1892 with the sole purpose of resettling Eastern European and Sephardic Jewish refugees. Today, JFS supports the adjustment and employment of refugees and immigrants from all religions and cultures worldwide, including Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. With our many social service programs like family mentoring, financial assistance, ESL, citizenship classes, and job placement - we help new Americans become fully integrated members of our community. We encourage volunteers from all backgrounds!
