Playworks

Volunteer at Grant Park's Turkey Trot 5k and Kids Dash and help us bring the power of play to Illinois! Your support will benefit the more than 30 schools and youth organizations we partner with to serve nearly 20,000 kids.

Volunteer opportunities include: registration assistant, post race registration/food, course marshall, water station and medals. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt for their service.

Playworks is the leading nonprofit in Illinois leveraging play as a tool to promote healthy behaviors, increase physical activity and improve the learning environment in elementary schools. Our model uses recess, a time in the school day that has been largely overlooked as an opportunity to boost learning, to implement a program that reduces bullying, provides more time for classroom teaching, and increases physical activity.

Mission Statement

The mission of Playworks is to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.

Description

Playworks’ vision is that one day every child in America will get to play - every day. We create a place for every kid on the playground, a place where every kid belongs, has fun and is part of the game. We offer an essential opportunity for children to explore their imaginations, to connect with other kids and to stretch and grow physically, emotionally and socially.

Playworks is the only organization in the country to send well-trained, energetic full-time program coordinators, called coaches, into low-income schools to become part of the community through play.

For nearly two decades, Playworks has served schools around the country, using games, bouncy balls, hula hoops and jump ropes as tools to bring out the best in kids. Through our full-time, direct service model, our coaches enhance and transform recess and play into a positive experience that helps kids and teachers get the most out of every learning opportunity. Our rock star coaches know nearly every child by name, orchestrating play and physical activity through the five components of the Playworks program every day.

We believe in the power of play to bring out the best in every kid. Playworks creates a place for every kid on the playground -- a place where every kid belongs, has fun and is part of the game. It doesn't matter if they have never even played the game before, we ensure they have a place that is safe and welcoming, where they can play and thrive, belong and contribute. Our goal is every kid takes this positive experience back to the classroom, back to learning, and back to their communities.
