Come enjoy a sunny San Diego day while helping Nile Sisters fulfill their commitment to San Diego and the environment to keep the 47th Street Canyon clean!
Nile Sisters Development Initiative (NSDI) is a community-based California nonprofit 501 (c) (3) that provides vital services to refugees, immigrants and other underserved community members in San Diego County. Our mission is to educate, support and offer training to refugee and immigrant women and their families to help them overcome barriers to social and economic self-reliance.
We recently adopted a canyon (Olivia/47th Street Canyon) that we tend to every month. This upcoming month we are switching it up and collaborating with a movement much larger than us. We have decided to partner with I Love A Clean San Diego and Canyonlands to partake in California Coastal Cleanup Day and we would love you to be a part of it! The more the merrier.
Tools and gloves will be provided. Please bring your own water and dress appropriately for a day in the sun (including sunscreen). Feel free to contact for more information. On the day of event we will meet at Nile Sisters Headquarters (6035 University Avenue, Suite 22, San Diego, CA 92115) and proceed to carpool to the canyon together.

Mission Statement
The Nile Sisters Development Initiative mission is to educate, support, and offer training to refugee and immigrant women and their families to help them overcome barriers to social and economic self-reliance.
Our Vision:
We seek to establish a well-integrated, productive, and vital refugee/immigrant community in San Diego County.
Description
San Diego’s Need for Refugee Outreach
Nile Sisters Development Initiative aids newcomers and migrants to San Diego beyond the initial allocation period. We also assist refugee and immigrant families who experience difficulties after assimilation. Since 2001, Nile Sisters has served thousands of refugees and immigrants. In 2013 alone, we served more than 1,700 refugees in San Diego County.
The following are a few of the many reasons we assist refugees:
- refugees frequently arrive in the US with few or no belongings
- most refugees lack basic English language skills
- most refugees lack employment skills that are marketable in the US
- most refugees lack knowledge of US legal, monetary, social, and transportation systems
- some families have lost their breadwinners
- some refugees have higher education but in a language other than English
- some refugees experience culture shock due to lack of acculturation services
