The Prisoners Literature Project sends free books to prisoners in the United States. We give the gifts of literature and knowledge to men and women with limited access to books. We hold book-packing sessions at 2022 Blake Street, Berkeley, California. The sessions are held every Wednesday between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Please join us to answer letters from prisoners, select books from our library of donated books, and prepare packages for shipping. No sign-up in advance is needed. Just show up Wednesday evening and stay as little or as long as you'd like during the sessions. Our book-packing sessions are conducted in a friendly and casual environment. We are always in need of new volunteers, and everyone is welcome. We also have other volunteer opportunities available. Please see our website (www.prisonlit.org) for more details about us. [IMPORTANT NOTICE: We are suspending our volunteer sessions until further notice due to COVID-19. About Prisoners Literature Project

Location:

Grassroots House, 2022 Blake Street, Berkeley, CA 94704, US

Mission Statement

To provide quality reading material free of charge to people in prisons across the United States. To promote literacy and education among those in prison. To facilitate social change, self-empowerment, and rehabilitation in the prison system.

Description

The Prisoners Literature Project is a grassroots organization that sends books to prisoners in the United States free of charge. Our clients are indigent prison inmates with limited access to books. We send them books because we believe that everyone should have the chance to read. Books can open doors, and books can change lives. The project is an all-volunteer effort that mainly relies on donations of books and postage money in order to function. The project is located in the Grassroots House at 2022 Blake Street in Berkeley, California, and holds book-packing sessions at 2025 Blake Street. It operates in partnership with Bound Together Books and the Grassroots House. See our website for information about volunteering opportunities.
