Brief Summary:

This VISTA will work with our social worker to increase our capacity to connect community members to services and resource in the community and help identify non-legal needs of the community we serve. The VISTA will also help pursue opportunities that would enable us to expand our social work program.

Project Description:

Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto’s (CLSEPA) mission is to provide transformative legal services that enable diverse communities in East Palo Alto and beyond to achieve a secure and thriving future. CLSEPA does this by providing direct legal services to the community in the areas of immigration, housing, and economic advancement. With VISTA support, we aim to expand the pro bono, volunteer and legal resources available to low-income East Palo Alto and Peninsula residents. In particular, the project seeks to increase participation by legal volunteers on projects that: (a) help local residents to lift themselves out of poverty by providing them with access to legal and non-legal resources that expand their education and employment opportunities; and (b) help preserve the stock of safe and affordable housing in East Palo Alto and neighboring communities. The VISTA project will (1) expand our outreach to and recruitment of private attorneys on the Peninsula and at Silicon Valley law firms; (2) strengthen collaborations with neighboring universities and law schools to increase the pool of student volunteers; and (3) develop outreach strategies and materials that expand resources to underserved populations (particularly limited-English proficient residents).

Member Duties:

This VISTA will work with our social worker to increase our capacity to connect community members to supportive services and resources in the community. The VISTA will help our social worker and program staff identify the most pressing non-legal needs of the community that we serve and expand our network and deepen our connections with community and government partners who provide supportive services. The VISTA will assist our social worker and program staff to create materials and procedures to better inform our clients about and help them access supportive services and resources available in the community.
