Interested in volunteering alongside a group of coworkers? 826 Valencia has many opportunities to do so! With so many programs reaching thousands of students each year, we could always use an extra hand-or in this case many extra hands. If your group is looking for a unique and fun volunteering opportunity, take a look at our various program descriptions below.

*Please note that the time frames listed below include a mandatory one-hour orientation prior to working with our students.

Field Trips | Monday-Thursday | 9:00 AM -12:30 PM | At 826 Valencia's Writer's Lab

On weekday mornings we open up our Writer’s Lab to students for a two-hour writing extravaganza where they are challenged to collectively write an original story in two hours. Volunteer roles include: typist, in-house editor, illustrator, and crucial support roles that help guide students as they learn the elements of storytelling. If you have a creative and versatile group, this could be a great fit.

About 826 Valencia

Location:

826 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA 94110, US

Mission Statement

826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

Description

826 Valencia comprises three writing centers-our flagship location in the Mission District, a center in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and a new center on the ground floor of an affordable housing building in Mission Bay -and three satellite classrooms at nearby public schools. All of our programs are offered free of charge to make them accessible to the students who would not otherwise be able to access our support.

Our goals are:

1) Transform students’ relationships to writing, building their confidence and pride.

2) Provide individualized attention and support, so students can make great leaps in learning.
3) Partner with under-resourced schools and communities, providing our free services to those who would not otherwise have access.

4) Cultivate wonder, inspiring imagination and creativity in all of our spaces and programs.
