Chaperone Needed to Assist with Reading Program

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey

A Volunteer Chaperone is needed to escort and supervise students participating in United Way’s Reading Stars Program. Reading Stars is a program that works to improve fundamental reading skills for struggling students. Schools are paired with corporations who provide reading coach volunteers who work with the students for an hour each week.

Recently, one of our schools had to shut down their program due to there being insufficient staff to supervise the students as they traveled from Sheridan School to their coaching site. A volunteer is needed from 8:45- 11:15am on Tuesdays (3/6; 3/27; 4/10; 4/17; 5/1; 5/8 and 5/15) to chaperone the students on the bus and at the site.

Volunteer must have proof of current Child Abuse, PA Criminal and FBI Criminal background checks. Interested applicants please contact me via email abrindisi@uwsepa.org or phone (215)665-2585 to set up an interview.

A stipend for the commitment is available to qualified applicants.

Mission Statement

To harness, leverage and strategically invest the collective power of donors, advocates and volunteers, to drive measurable results that improve the lives of people in our region.

Description

Our Vision

To be the region's leading catalyst for change, inspiring and uniting local communities to collaboratively invest in results that ensure children succeed in school, families are financially stable, and older adults thrive.

Our History

Members of the business community established our United Way in 1921, although it was originally called the Welfare Federation of Philadelphia. It was created to eliminate overlapping charities, so money could be raised and distributed more efficiently. From its inception until today, United Way remains one of the most outstanding ways for individuals and corporations to make an impact on local health, education, and social service needs.

As originally conceived, United Way still ensures that those most in need are getting the best help they can. We are committed to treating entire communities, providing the tools, services, and expertise that can enable those communities to become stronger and more independent.
